India's Neighbourhood Policy: The Way Ahead

One of the constituent partners of The Tagore Institute of Peace Studies, the West Bengal Federation of the United Nations Associations, Webfuna has organised a day-long regional seminar on February 3, 2026 on “India’s Neighbourhood Policy: The Way Ahead” with The Indian Federation of United Nations Associations, New Delhi (Ifuna) The Neighbourhood First idea originated in 2008 but gained real direction in 2014 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, becoming a key pillar of India’s foreign policy. As India’s relationships with several neighbouring countries come under strain, its regional strategy—shaped by long‑standing cultural and historical ties—must navigate the tension between rising global ambitions and local sensitivities. The 2014 policy sought to revitalise South Asian engagement through stronger connectivity, trade, and development partnerships. This seminar examines the challenges the policy now faces, including uneven implementation, perceptions of overreach, and increasing regional competition, while also exploring potential solutions.
